BS 5665-2:1989 — Safety of toys — Specification for flammability requirements
This part of BS 5665 specifies the flammability requirements for toys to reduce the risk of fire hazards during normal use or reasonably foreseeable misuse. It covers:
General principles for evaluating flammability of toys.
Categories of toys subject to flammability requirements, including:
Toys to be worn on the head (beards, moustaches, wigs, masks, etc.).
Toy costumes and disguise outfits.
Toys intended for children to enter (e.g., play tents).
Soft-filled toys.
Test methods to determine ease of ignition, flame spread rate, and burning behaviour.
Performance requirements, specifying maximum allowable rates of flame spread or resistance levels.
The standard ensures toys are designed and constructed to minimize fire risk under foreseeable play conditions.
