BS EN 60079-10:1996 is a European Standard titled "Electrical apparatus for explosive gas atmospheres - Part 10: Classification of hazardous areas". This standard provides guidelines for the classification of areas where explosive gas atmospheres may occur and specifies the types of electrical apparatus that are suitable for use in these areas.
The standard defines hazardous areas as locations where the concentration of flammable gases, vapours, or liquids is above a certain threshold, which may pose a risk of explosion or fire. It provides guidance on the zoning of these areas based on the likelihood and frequency of the presence of explosive atmospheres.
BS EN 60079-10:1996 also specifies the requirements for electrical apparatus that can be used in hazardous areas, including the design, construction, and testing of equipment. The standard defines two main types of protection for electrical apparatus: flameproof (Ex d) and increased safety (Ex e).
Compliance with BS EN 60079-10:1996 is required in many countries to ensure the safety of electrical installations in hazardous areas. The standard has been updated several times since its initial publication to reflect the latest developments in hazardous area classification and electrical apparatus design.
