BS EN 60695-4:1996 is a British Standard for Fire hazard testing. It specifies the needle-flame test, which is used to assess the fire hazard of electrotechnical products subjected to an ignition source in the form of a small flame similar to a match or cigarette lighter. The needle-flame test is designed to simulate the ignition of a small flame in or around an electrotechnical product. The test involves applying a flame from a needle-shaped burner to a test specimen for a specified duration and observing the product's behavior during and after exposure to the flame. The purpose of the test is to determine whether the product under test poses a fire hazard in a real-life situation where a small flame might come into contact with it. The test assesses the product's resistance to fire, its ability to withstand the heat generated by the flame, and the product's ability to self-extinguish after the flame has been removed. BS EN 60695-4:1996 specifies the test procedure, the requirements for the test apparatus, and the criteria for evaluating the results. The standard also provides guidance on the interpretation of the results and their relevance to real-life situations. The needle-flame test specified in BS EN 60695-4:1996 is used widely in the electrotechnical industry to assess the fire hazard of products, and compliance with this standard is often a requirement for product certification and approval.
