Study the adsorption of methylene blue (mb) dye by poly (vinyl) alcohol infused multiwalled carbon nanotubes hydrogel beads / Kalai Yoogan Visava Nathan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Adsorption is a widely used technique for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from wastewater. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and Polyvinyl alcohol/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PVA/MWCNTs) in beads form were prepared and used as adsorbents. Batch adsorption experiment was conducted to study the effect of contact time, initial dye concentration, and adsorbent dosage on dye adsorption properties. There was no visible change in the removal of MB dye on PVA and PVA/MWCNTs beads after 4 hours and 4.5 hours, respectively. PVA/MWCNTs recorded the highest dye removal efficiency of 84.94 % whereas PVA recorded 31.35 % in a 10 mg/L dye solution. Langmuir, Freundlich and Elovich adsorption isotherms were studied and the results showed that the MB adsorption is best represented by the Langmuir Type I isotherm model. PVA/MWCNTs beads has maximum adsorption capacity of about 9 times higher than that of PVA beads. The maximum adsorption capacity of PVA/MWCNTs recorded 1.5319 mg/g while PVA recorded only 0.1667 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics study of MB dye removal revealed that pseudo-second order model fit best to an experimental data. The overall results indicated that PVA/MWCNTs beads are more effective than PVA beads in MB dye removal.
