Study on the properties of hydrochar produced by hydrothermal carbonization using coconut husk

Study on the properties of hydrochar produced by hydrothermal carbonization using coconut husk / Liew Jia Hong
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of coconut husk aims to produce hydrochar with improved fuel characteristic without preliminary drying. In HTC process, the biomass feedstock (coconut husk) was heated with deionised water up to temperature between 180oC and 240oC with autogenous pressure for a residence time between 24 to 96 hours. The objective of this research is to investigate the effect of process conditions (HTC temperature and residence time) on the hydrothermal carbonization of coconut husk as the biomass feedstock. The experiment were conducted with different HTC temperature and residence time. The highest hydrochar mass yield obtained was 1.355g with the condition of 180oC and 24 hours residence time. Meanwhile, the hydrochar produced with the highest Higher Heating Value is 94.618 MJ/kg (240oC, 96 hours). Besides, the combustion properties, surface morphology and functionality of the hydrochar produced with different condition were investigated in this research. The carbon content of coconut husk before and after HTC process were assessed by using CHNS elemental analysis and results shows that carbon to hydrogen ratio increases when HTC temperature increases.
