An experimental study on bending capacity of light weight precast concrete pile

An experimental study on bending capacity of light weight precast concrete pile / Tee Yi Cong
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The ultimate bending capacity for detail of light weight precast concrete pile with different cross sectional design have been studied to determine the most suitable light weight precast concrete pile to replace mangrove pile. As light weight is one of the main characteristic of mangrove pile, the light weight characteristic is targeted to be below 35 kg which is the weight that a worker can handle. T1 specimen which is a fully solid concrete pile acts as a control specimen. The bending capacity of T1 specimen is 0.594 kNm. T2 specimen is cast by using PVC pipe as hollow core. The weight reduction is significant compared to T1 which is from 45 kg to 28 kg. However, the bending capacity of T2 specimen is 0.392 kNm which is 34 % lower than control specimen. T3 specimen is cast using PVC pipe as hollow core with GFRP rebars as reinforcement while T4 specimen is cast using PVC pipe as hollow core with steel rebars as reinforcement. The weight of the T3 specimen is 34 kg while the weight of T4 specimen is 33 kg. The bending capacity of T3 specimen is 1.146 kNm which is 92.9 % higher than the control specimen and 192.3 % higher than T2 specimen. The bending capacity of T4 specimen is 2.247 kNm which is 278.3 % higher than control specimen and 473.2 % higher than T2. It can clearly be seen that the light weight concrete pile with PVC as hollow core with addition of reinforcement bar provides higher bending capacity. T4 specimen which fulfills the requirement of light weight property and high bending capacity is the best choice among the four type of specimen to replace mangrove pile.
