BS 5665-3:1989 — Safety of toys — Specification for migration of certain elements
This part of BS 5665 specifies the requirements and test methods for the migration of certain toxic elements from toy materials and toy parts. It covers:
The elements controlled (such as antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, selenium).
The limit values for each element to ensure that, under reasonably foreseeable conditions of use, toys do not present a risk of poisoning or other health hazards to children.
The sampling and test methods for simulating contact with gastric acid (migration testing) to determine the release of these elements.
Application to toys and toy materials which may be sucked, licked, swallowed, or ingested, especially paints, coatings, plastics, and similar accessible parts.
