Optimization of adsorption process using limestone for removing heavy metals from synthetic rainwater

Optimization of adsorption process using limestone for removing heavy metals from synthetic rainwater / Nor Khalilah Abd Radzaz
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Heavy metals, could be removed from rainwater by an adsorption process, especially when the concentration are high. This study focused on the optimum of adsorption process to remove heavy metals from synthetic rainwater. The capability of limestone to remove heavy metals was investigated in this research. The effect of dosage, pH, contact time and shaking speed was studied to find the best performance in removing the concern parameter. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics were determined. The limestone used in this research is characterized using various analytical techniques such as X-ray Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopes. Based on the obtained results, the removals of manganese, iron and lead were highest at dosage 10g (93%), 5g (91%) and 20g (77%) respectively. The linear form obtained for Langmuir and Freundlich for all the parameters shows that the parameters were fitted Langmuir Isotherm Model as the obtained R2 from the analysis is greater than Freundlich Isotherm Model. In this study, kinetic model for the adsorption of heavy metals by limestone were are analysed. The obtained results show that the adsorption of process in this study were fitted Second-Pseudo Order. Therefore, the limestone has a good performance in order to remove low concentration of heavy metals from synthetic rainwater.
