The effect of soil grain size on oil infiltration rate in the unsaturated zone

The effect of soil grain size on oil infiltration rate in the unsaturated zone / Nurul ‘Afifah Mohd Khalib
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ LNAPL is an insoluble groundwater contaminant and has a lower density than water. However, in contrast to DNAPL which has a higher density than water. Once LNAPL infiltrates into the ground and flows down an unsaturated zone, LNAPL will stop at an altitude of water level as LNAPL is less dense than water. Porous media is not incorporated in an unsaturated zone consisting of solid and voids called the pore space. The pore space is filled with air and a little water. The bottom part of the unsaturated zone is called the side capillaries and some water is pulled up by the force from the base of the saturated zone. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effects of different size of soil details on oil infiltration into the soil. This experiment is carried out on a soil which, it contains the basic features of the soil, especially permeability. In this study, 3 different sizes of soil granules were used to determine the rate of oil infiltration by using diesel fuel with a different volume of 50ml. 100ml, 150ml. The method used is image analysis. The readings of each liquid height will be recorded based on the predetermined time range. According to experiments that have been carried out, the result shows oil infiltration slower due to the rate of coefficient of permeability smaller than the larger grain size. Soils that have been contaminated with oil will affect human activity and other ecosystems will also be affected.
