The effect of feed solutions on the pervaporation performances using metal organic framework mixed matrix membrane / Siti Nur Fazura Halim
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The effect of 1,4-dioxane/water, acetonitrile/water, and ethanol/water mixture on pervaporation performances by using metal organic framework (MOF) filled poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) MOF/PVA membrane were studied in this project. Pure PVA and MOF/PVA membranes are characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), degree of swelling and pervaporation. The pair of the feed solutions were selected based on their degree of polarity as compared to water where each of the organic solvent has higher, similar, and lower polarity as compared to water. The pervaporation process was conducted for 4 hours and the permeate was collected and further characterized its water content using Karl Fischer Titrator. The data of the pervaporation process were presented in terms of the permeation flux, separation factor, and pervaporation separation index (PSI) of the membrane. High polarity of organic solvent permeate high water content, separation factor, and PSI, but low permeate flux and degree of swelling. The degree of swelling of the membranes were also study to relate with the pervaporation performance and it was proven that it plays a significant role in determining levels of flux and separation factor of the solvent. High flux with low separation are obtained when the degree of swelling of the membrane is high. Overall, high polarity emitted low sorption and better pervaporation performance. Hence, it can be concluded that pervaporation is sorption dominant rather than diffusion dominant.
