With the growing of iron oxide nanoparticles applications, the concern about the toxicity of it towards environment was highlighted, yet not much information could be obtained to clarify its safety. Iron oxide nanoparticles were surface functionalized commonly with polymer binder in order to improve its colloidal stability, especially in magnetophoretic separation of microalgae. In this study, the toxicity of bare and surface functionalized 25nm iron oxide nanoparticles were studied on the microalgae Chlorella sp. growth kinetics and also the impact on its lipid, carbohydrate and protein contents. The study showed that PDDA coated iron oxide nanoparticles have the greatest negative impact on Chlorella sp. compared to bare and chitosan coated iron oxide nanoparticles which might due to the toxic properties of PDDA and also the ability to agglomerate and inhibit nutrient uptake and cause light shading effect. The impacts of nanoparticle concentration ranging from 0.15mg/L, to 20mg/L were also studied. The result showed that higher the concentration of iron oxide nanoparticles added in microalgae, the greater the detrimental effect towards the growth of alga with exposure to 20 mg/L showing the worst impact. In this study, the two iron oxide with the size of 25nm and 300nm studied on Chlorella sp. showed that these two sizes of particles has no significant difference on the impact towards Chlorella sp.
