Laboratory-scaled mass rapid transit system

Laboratory-scaled mass rapid transit system / Chew Yoong Sen
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rail transit technology had gone through a very comprehensive and intensive evolution in recent decades. Those developments and innovations occurred in both technological and engineering aspects. Mass rapid transit (MRT) system is one of the products of the mentioned incident. Its unprecedented growth was proved by the existence of MRT Systems in 17 cities in the early 1950s to about 110 cities worldwide in the early twenty-first century. In this project, a laboratory-scaled mass rapid transit system based on Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is built. The motivation of this project is to design and invent a laboratory scaled mass rapid transit system that can demonstrate the operation of a real MRT system to the public. Omron CJ2M series PLC, Shihlin Electric Human-machine-interface EU200 series, Lego 7938 City Train Set and Arduino microcontroller board are used to develop the system. Several NPN sensors are implemented in the system to perform the automated operation of a real MRT system. Other devices such as servo motor, light-emitting diode, DC motor are used to support the primary function of the rail system. Throughout the process of completing the project, effort is done on establishing a stable and suitable interface between the hardware and software of the MRT system. As a result, a simulation software in controlling the operation of an MRT system is developed. Besides that, effort is allocated on utilising Human-machine-interface (HMI) machine as the primary control panel of the MRT system. The designed train project comprises of several operation modes with preset conditions. Finally, the performance of the MRT system is assessed. Experiments are carried out to determine the capability of the system.
