___________________________________________________________________________________ The effectiveness of a landfill cover design was investigated in this research. The main cover material was a mixture of sand and laterite and the main purpose was to protect waste against rainfall infiltration. The landfill considered is situated in Muassim, Makkah and the sand sample was simulated in the Malaysian laboratory to be the same as one in Muassim. The samples were placed into two layers in the experimental Perspex column. The bottom layer was the sand with a thickness of 400mm to represent the existing cover at Muassim landfill. The top layer was the mix, consisted of the some sand and a laterite soil from Malaysia, of equal proportion. The thickness of the mix was the variable in this research. Simulated rainfall was applied onto top layer inside the Perspex column which was 3.31 liter of water or equivalent to 112mm of rainfall which was the amount per year at Muassim. The experiment was being allowed to run for 24 hours. The data obtained from this experiment were the breakthrough time that is time taken for water to pass through the entire soil thickness in the column and the volume of water collected from the breakthrough within the experiment time. For the arrangement considered in this test, the minimum required thickness of the top cover layer to prevent any breakthrough was found to be 120mm. Thus a 400mm sand plus 120mm sand plus laterite mixture was capable of holding water equivalent to one year rainfall of Muassim, Saudi Arabia.
