Study of opto-acoustic data communication module for underwater application

Study of opto-acoustic data communication module for underwater application / Nurul Najihah Ahmad
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ An opto-acoustic technology is a combination of two technologies which is are optical and acoustic. Currently, acoustic signal is widely used in many underwater applications compared to the optical signal. In underwater localization, acoustic gives inaccurate distance measurement for short range application while optic signal theoretically can compensate this weakness as it not easily effected by noise for a short distance. Nevertheless, optic and acoustic seen to be complement each other‘s. Unfortunately, until now there is still no evident found by using both of the method simultaneously for underwater localization. In this research study, we have interest to know the reliability of the opto-acoustic system for underwater localization application. The main objective of this project is to investigate the interference effect of acoustic and optic signal when both are used simultaneously for underwater localization system. Interference might exist due to travelling properties of both waves and variation of water properties from one point to another. To identify whether one signal influences the performance of the other signal, each method is separately studied. Performance of each method becomes a benchmark for a combined optical and acoustic system. Practically, level of interference is measured with respect to several factors: water depth, density, pressure and temperature. At the end of this research we expect to prove the reliability of the opto-acoustic technique for underwater localization both theoretically and experimentally.
