Production of microalgae biomass on porous substrate

Production of microalgae biomass on porous substrate / Nur Nazatul Alya Roslan
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Microalgae is one of new sources to produce biofuel for the world demand. The biofuel is a clean fuel that give less environmental problems. The microalgae started to be culture in ponds. Somehow, there disadvantages to the method such as land usage, high labour cost and low biomass. The conventional cultivation produce microalgae that contain high amount of water. When the cell have high amount of water, it need extra energy to reduce the water inside microalgae before it can be used for other things. Recently, a photo bioreactor using porous substrate been introduce to the world. It believe that this method can produce more microalgae and reduce the water contain inside the cells. For this experiment, a filter paper, Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane and Polyvinylidene Difloride (PVDF) membrane is been used to study the growth of microalgae on them and to find the dry weight of the microalgae on the porous substrate. In this experiment, the growth of Cylindratheca sp is used to be observed under microscope. The microalgae are been culture on different porous substrate. From the result, it shown that filter paper have the highest and well distributed microalgae on it. While for PES and PVDF, the growth of microalgae are more on upper side of membrane. For Navicula sp and Amphora sp, it been used to find the dry weight on different types of porous substrate and the microalgae weight inside the suspension. The filter paper have the highest dry weight of the microalgae on porous substrate which is 0.0081 g/cm2. For the Navicula sp in suspension, PVDF flask have the highest value 0.104g and in Amphora sp, PES flask have the highest weight which is 0.045g.
