______________________________________________________________________________________ Jet fuel is a type of aviation fuel invented for use in aircraft powered by gas turbine engines. Jet fuel is derived from fractional distillation of petroleum which originated from fossil fuels. The environmental impact from aviation activity appears because aircraft engines emitted particulates and gases as the products of jet fuel combustion.Carbon monoxide (CO) emitted from aircraft in-flight is significant as it contributed to the amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere. When there is a reaction of oxygen and nitrogen gases during combustion, Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) will be produced especially at high temperature. NOx in the atmosphere produce a harmful ozone layer near to the earth surface called trophosphere. Trophospheric ozone is the major source of smog which causes serious health problems. Algae biofuel is an alternative to fossil fuels that uses algae as its source. It is potentially become one of the biofuel that could replace petroleum derived fuel in a sustainable world which emit less CO and NOx. This research is carried out in order to investigate the effect of algae on emissions characteristics. By applying GSP software, simulation will be managed to assess the engine combustion characteristics of GE-90 turbofan engine by using jet fuel, jatropha biofuel and jatropha-algae biofuel. The results showed that combustion of biofuel produce less amounts of CO and NOx compared to jet fuel. The presence of algae does not impact amount of CO and NOx as jatropha and jatropha algae biofuels produce similar EI of NOx and CO. However algae is considered a more viable alternative fuels as it has more advantages in terms of productivity, their life cycle and environmental impact.
