The production and characterization of activated carbon from rhizophora tree (mangrove tree) by pyrolysis and gasification of char

The production and characterization of activated carbon from rhizophora tree (mangrove tree) by pyrolysis and gasification of char / Nur Hajar Rosely
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The mangrove pile leftover which is usually considered as waste from construction site can be customize and utilize as innovation to produce high quality activated carbon. High quality activated carbon have several characteristics which are high BET surface volume, high carbon content, high adsorption capacity and high percentage of yield. Activated carbon can act as removal for methylene blue through adsorption process. The main objective of this research was to prepare optimum activated carbon from mangrove timber via physical activation with the utilization of CO2 gas and also characterization of it. The manipulated variables were activation temperature and also activation of time. Optimal activated carbon was choose by undergo the adsorption on methylene blue and the highest adsorption capacity was categorize as optimal. The optimal activated carbon which was prepared at an activation temperature of 850oC with CO2 flowrate of 150 cm3/min for two hours had produce 95.33% capacity of carbon. Then, yield of char was 17.384%. Then, methylene blue adsorption capacity and BET surface area of 312.5mg/g, 546.4251 m2/g. The experimental data of adsorption compatible with Langmuir isotherm with R2 of 0.9925. The results of adsorption study showed that the activated carbon prepared from mangrove timber is suitable for methylene blue removal.
