Influence of the incorporation of silica fume on compressive strength and durability characteristics of recycled aggregate concrete / Nor Liyana Ayuni Ishak
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ The influence of the incorporation of silica fume on compressive strength and durability characteristics of recycled aggregate concrete has been investigated due to the shortage of supply of natural aggregate and increasing in consumption of cement that produce more carbon dioxide during its manufacture. Construction waste of bored pile grade 40 were collected in construction site at Alor Setar, Kedah as coarse aggregate to be used in the concrete mix. The construction waste were cleaned to remove the impurities and dried in a 105℃ oven for at least 24 hours, crushed and screened 10 mm and 5 mm sieve to obtain the desired particle size. The natural coarse aggregate was replaced with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of recycled concrete aggregate. While the silica fume was utilized into the production recycled aggregate concrete in the manner of partial replacement of Ordinary Portland cement at the percentage of 15%. A mix containing 100% crushed granite aggregate and Ordinary Portland cement was prepared for comparison purposes. All the mixes were subjected the same water curing process until the testing age of 7, 14 and 28 days. The results show that RAC containing 100% RCA and 15% SF could achieve compressive strength of 72 MPa while possessing density, UPV, water absorption, porosity, gas permeability of 2327 kg/m3, 4.18 km/s, 3.97% , 8.95%, 0.65 × 10-17 m2, respectively and acceptable workability with the slump value of 175 mm. The pozzolanic reaction and the filler effects as a consequence of SF inclusion, enhance the compressive strength and durability characteristics of RAC that has porous RCA and contain attached mortar.
