Simulation of mudflow with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Model Based On Marker and cell (MAC) method

Simulation of mudflow with a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Model Based On Marker and cell (MAC) method / Chan Yeh Gal
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Mudflow rheology is a very complicated phenomenon. Studies related to the flow of muds tend to classify muds as non-Newtonian fluid. A fundamental study on mudflow and its rheological properties was carried out. Until now, several numerical models representing the rheological properties of mudflow have been developed to describe the complex behavior of mudflow with varying degrees of success. The interest in the numerical simulation of free-surface flows is increasing due to rapid development of computer technology. A numerical method for simulating mudflows based on the Marker and Cell (MAC) approach was developed in this study. The model incorporates the bilinear rheological model for viscoplastic fluid which is a modification of Bingham model. The dam-break problem was analyzed because it has been widely studied experimentally and numerically, representing a benchmark problem for verifying numerical models involving free-surface flows. The accuracy of the numerical model was assessed by comparing the simulation results with analytical solution of dam-break problem and available experimental data. Comparison between the model predictions and laboratory experiments shows reasonable agreement. Finally, the model was used to simulate dam-break of mudflow and the flow characteristics were observed.
