Analysis of a cracked metallic panel repaired with bonded composite material
ABSTRACT The aim of reinforcement of the damaged or cracked part of a structure is to restore structural efficiency. A two-dimensional finite element analysis is presented to predict the efficiency and effectiveness of the repaired pre-cracked metallic panel with bonded composite patch. In this analysis, pre-cracked aluminum 2024-T3 panels (680 x 180 x 1.5mm) repaired with rectangular boron-epoxy composite patch with different overlap length were modeled and analysis using MSC Patran/Nastran. Several configuration of design of patch were investigated. Two-dimensional finite element analysis involving three layer technique is introduced to investigate the stress intensity factor, maximum 2D stress, load carrying capacity and crack propagation. 2D Mindlin plate elements which are with transverse shear deformation capability are applied in the analysis; cracked plate, adhesive and boron-epoxy composite patch. Maximum 2D stress and stress intensity factor at the crack tip of the repair panels are compared with the unpatch panel. It was found that there are significant reductions of maximum 2D stress and stress intensity factor at the crack tip after patching is done. In the analysis, the most effective design of patch will be determined. ABSTRAK Tujuan peneguhan bahagian struktur yang rosak atau retak adalah untuk memulihkan kecekapan struktur. Satu analisis elemen terbatas dua dimensi dibentangkan untuk meramalkan kecekapan dan keberkesanan membaiki sekeping panel berlogam yang retak dengan terikat tampalan bahan komposit. Dalam analisis ini, sekeping aluminium panel 2024 T3 (680 x 180 x 1.5mm) yang retak dibaiki dengan tampalan segiempat tepat boron-epoksi komposit dengan kepanjangan pertindihan yang berbeza telah dimodel dan dianalisis menggunakan MSC Patran / Nastran. Beberapa konfigurasi reka bentuk bagi tampalan telah disiasat. Analisis elemen terbatas dua dimensi melibatkan tiga teknik lapisan diperkenalkan untuk menyiasat faktor keamatan tekanan, tekanan 2D maksimum, keupayaan menanggung beban dan penyebaran retak. Plat 2D elemen-elemen Mindlin dengan keupayaan ubah bentuk ricih melintang digunakan dalam analisis; plat retak, perekat dan tampalan boron-epoksi komposit. Tekanan 2D maksimum dan faktor keamatan tekanan pada hujung celah bagi panel yang dibaiki dibandingkan dengan panel yang belum dibaiki. Terdapat pengurangan penting pada tekanan 2D maksimum dan faktor keamatan tekanan pada hujung celah selepas penampalan adalah dibuat. Reka bentuk tampalan yang paling berkesan akan ditentukan
