_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ To date, the concern about environmental protection has been aroused over the years. Synthetic dye is the most common organic pollutant that is being discharged from textile industry. Such dyes are highly toxic and can cause severe effects on aquatic environment even in a small amount. Hence, the removal of synthetic dye from textile wastewater is necessary in order to protect the environment. In this present study, solid wastes such as rice husk ash (RHA) and coal fly ash (CFA) are being used as the adsorbent to remove brilliant green (BG). This study is concerning the preparation of RHA/CFA adsorbent by using sol-gel method. The adsorbent was pre-treated with HNO3 and NaOH to increase the capacity of the adsorption. Experimental investigations were carried out by using the RHA/CFA adsorbent to study the effect contact time, initial dye concentration and shaker speed on the removal of BG from the wastewater. The dye adsorption rate was found to be dependent on the contact time and the initial dye concentration but less reliant on the shaker speed. RHA/CFA adsorbent was characterized by performing SEM, FTIR, BET surface area measurement and XRD analysis. The result of characterization for the prepared and spent adsorbents shows that the adsorption process was affected by both the physical and chemical characteristic of the adsorbents. This study also revealed that the RHA/CFA adsorbent can be used to remove BG from textile wastewater effectively.
