Study on polyhyroxyalkanoate (pha) accumulation in aerobic granules effect of aeration rate and organic loading rate

Study on polyhyroxyalkanoate (pha) accumulation in aerobic granules effect of aeration rate and organic loading rate / Mohd Farhan Mohd Nor
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In laboratory scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) aerobic granules were cultured under aerobic condition. The palm oil mill effluent (POME) are the sole source of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) accumulation. The objective of this work is the study of the effect of aeration rate and organic loading rate (OLR) on PHA accumulation in aerobic granules. Both aeration rate and OLR plays important role in formation of PHA. In this study, the SBR was operated at aeration rate of 1, 2 and 3 L/min. Whereas the OLR was 2, 3 and 4 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/m3 day. As a result, at aeration rate 1 L/min is unable to produce PHA. The highest of product yield of PHA of 82.96% was obtained with aeration rate of 3 L/min. Moreover, the increase of OLR might be lower selective to produce PHA.
