The purpose of the thesis is to develop power transmission system of Ultralight Helicopter (ULH). The development is focusing on two sections which are the counter rotating transmission subsystem and rotational speed reduction subsystem. Three analyses are performed for the sprocket ratio optimization, the chain tensile strength and the strength of the base support plate that hold the entire subsystem. The sprocket ratio is calculated by finding the rotational speed ratio between the blades rotation and the engine speed. The analysis of the chain tensile strength uses manual calculation to determine the tension of the chain at maximum speed and is compared with the chain tensile strength that is given by manufacturer. The base support plate is studied using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). In the finding, the sprocket ratio used is
4 with 13 and 52 teeth for both driver and driven sprocket. The maximum tension of the chain is 5.5 kN without safety factor and 11 kN with safety factor 2 which is not exceeding the minimum tensile strength the chain by referring to the manufacturer specification. From the FEA, the maximum Von Mises stress 3.642 MPa of the base support plate is not exceeding the AA6061 T6 yield strength 275 MPa. Generally the analysis show the design is able to perform as the power transmission system of the ULH. From literature search, thesis published regarding the implementation of the chain and sprocket in the power transmission system of an aircraft is limited. Thus the thesis represents the study that helps researchers to rely on the ability of the simple power transmission system using chain and sprocket to be used for Ultralight
Helicopter.
