Effect of Calophyllum Inophyllum biodiesel-diesel blends on combustion, performance, exhaust particulate matter and gaseous emissions in a multi-cylinder diesel engine
In this work, the effects of add ing of ined ible Calophyllum lnophyllum biodiescl to diesel fuel on performance, gaseous emissions, pnrticulnte matter (PM) a nd combustion cha racter istics were stud ied in a med i um-du ty, high• pressu re common- ra il turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine under different speed and torq ue conditions. The key physicochemical properties of nea t biodiesel, biod iescl-diescl blends and diesel were cha racterized a nd analysed. The test fuels used were a fossil d iesel fuel, Bl 0, B20, B30, and BSO of biod iesel-diesel fuels. The resul ts indicated that a ll blends of biodiesel fuels have physicochemical properties relatively close to those of petroleum d iesel. The experimen tal results also demonstrated that there arc some drawbacks in engine brake power, brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC), and nit rogen oxide (NO,) with the blend of biodiesel i n the fuel. Besides, refinement in bra ke thermal efficiency (BTE) a nd ex ha ust emissions were recorded across a ll engi ne speeds. Moreover, the emission improvement was characterized by lower ca rbon monoxide (CO) and reduced in both of the smoke and PM emissions. Also, reduction in the magni tude of peak combustion pressure and heat release rate (HRR) were also found with biodiesel blends. Overall, the results indicated that Calophyllum Inophyllum biodiesel can be used satisfactoril y in a n unmodi fied mul ti-cylinder high-pressure common-rail diesel engine.
