Heavy metal removal from synthetic wastewater using pyrolyzed chicken feather fiber (pcff)

Heavy metal removal from synthetic wastewater using pyrolyzed chicken feather fiber (pcff) / Moon Wei Chek
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Wastewater treatment has been given much attention recently by the adsorption process using the low cost absorbents. The applications of chicken feather, a byproduct in poultry farming on wastewater treatment are boon for the environmental scientists and researchers. In this study, chicken feather fiber was prepared by thermal treatment and used as adsorbent for the removal of heavy metal from the synthetic wastewater. In the first stage, the preparation of pyrolyzed chicken feather fiber (PCFF) was done by a 2-step prolysis method. In the next stage, the preliminary batch studies were carried out to choose the best adsorbent. Results showed that PCFF-2 with pyrolysis temperature: T1 of 185 °C for 5 h and T2 of 400 °C for 1 h was the best adsorbent with the highest efficiency of heavy metal removal. In the batch adsorption studies, three types of heavy metals (calcium, manganese and copper) were evaluated by varying pH and mass of adsorbent. Results showed that the highest percentage removal for calcium, manganese and copper were 10.95% at pH 5 and 1.5 g of PCFF, 11.44% at pH 5 and 1.5 g of PCFF and 20.66% at pH 4 and 1.5 g of PCFF respectively. ANOVA analysis indicated that the mass of adsorbent was the most significant factor as compared to pH. In the optimization process, the optimization for calcium, manganese and copper occurred at the conditions: pH 4.89 and mass of adsorbent 1.5 g. The experimental data for copper removal fitted well with the Langmuir model with the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 0.1583 mg/g. SEM investigations showed the surface of PCFF-2 was rough, thus providing the larger surface area for the adsorption process. SEM images also showed the particles of heavy metal deposited onto the surface of PCFF-2 after the treatment process.
