Design analysis for optimal waste collection route using global positioning system (gps) and geographical information system (gis) / Muhammad A’riff Baharum
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ In a municipal solid waste management system, decreasing collection/hauling costs, which consist of 85 % of total disposal expenditure, can be carried out by a route optimization. If route optimization is performed in solid waste collection/hauling process, due to reductions in “empty miles” negativity, total expenditures will be decreased. The residential area of Taman Ilmu, Nibong Tebal, Pulau Pinang is no exception. The inception of Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) in planning and management has generated great interest among waste management authorities and researchers in a bid to explore this powerful tool to facilitate cost efficient and environmentally sound waste management plans. In recent years, the potential of GIS in simulating and evaluating waste collection route is beginning to be realized. The main concern of this study is to model a GIS data system for the improvement solid waste collection. Some waste management operation research techniques are used on a GIS platform to optimize the routing and evaluate the reduction in term of distance criteria and time criteria in the collection process. As a result, the optimum routes developed allowed the tradeoff between time and distance travel for effective waste hauling and a suitable transfer location identified of the area. Consequently, a route optimization process on the street stationary container collection system will contribute a reducing in total cost. Therefore, this paper examines and brings knowledge on how Global Positioning System (GPS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) can assist in increasing information and efficiency of solid waste collection system in an urban settlement in a developing country in term of such as distance criteria and time criteria.
