Disertasi ini membentangkan kajian berangka ke atas kelakuan ricih keratan keluli purlin Z dengan bukaan. Objektif kajian ini yang pertama adalah untuk menentukan keupayaan ricih keratan keluli purlin Z dengan bukaan web di bawah pembebanan ricih, kedua untuk mengkaji kesan pembolehubah bukaan web terhadap kapasiti ricih dan pengurangan isipadu keratan keluli purlin Z dan ketiga untuk mencadangkan satu keratan keluli purlin Z optimum dengan pembukaan web berdasarkan keputusan yang diperolehi daripada perisian LUSAS. Enam (6) pembolehubah seperti saiz bukaan, bentuk bukaan, jenis keratan, jarak antara bukaan, kedudukan dan susunan bukaan telah dikenal pasti dan diuji untuk mengkaji kesannya terhadap kapasiti ricih keratan keluli purlin Z. Keputusan menunjukkan bahawa kehadiran bukaan web tidak memperbaiki kelakuan kejuruteraan dan prestasi keratan keluli purlin Z dari segi tingkah laku ricih. Walau bagaimanapun, peningkatan dari segi pengurangan isipadu diperhatikan. Setiap pembesaran 0.1D (dimana D merujuk kepada ketinggian keratan) saiz bukaan menyebabkan penurunan anggaran 10% dalam kapasiti lengkokan ricih manakala pengurangan isipadu meningkat secara eksponen. Bentuk berlian 55% lebih baik dalam kapasiti lengkokan ricih berbanding dengan bukaan berbentuk bulatan tetapi bukaan bentuk bulatan 24% lebih baik dalam pengurangan isipadu. Keratan dengan ketinggian yang lebih kecil akan mencapai kapasiti lengkokan ricih yang lebih tinggi berbanding dengan keratan yang lebih besar ketinggian. Tetapi keratan yang lebih besar ketinggian mempunyai pengurangan isipadu lebih tinggi. Tiada perbezaan yang ketara dari segi kapasiti lengkokan ricih diperhatikan apabila jarak bukaan dimanipulasi. Posisi bukaan tidak mempunyai kesan ke atas kapasiti lengkokan ricih dan pengurangan isipadu. Manakala tidak ada kesan yang ketara ke atas kapasiti lengkokan ricih dan pengurangan isipadu diperhatikan apabila susunan bukaan dimanipulasi. Keratan optimum Z100-19 dengan ketinggian 0.3D-0.5D bukaan berbentuk berlian dan jarak bukaan 100mm pusat ke pusat bergantung kepada spesifikasi jurutera adalah dicadangkan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ This dissertation presents a numerical study on the shear behaviour of Z-section steel purlin with opening. The objective of this study is to firstly determine the shear capacity of Z-section steel purlin with web opening under shear loading, secondly to investigate the effect of web opening variables on the shear capacity and volume reduction of Z-section steel purlin and lastly to propose an optimal section of Zsection steel purlin with web opening based on results obtained from LUSAS finite element analysis software. Six (6) variables such as opening size, opening shape, section type, opening distance, opening position and opening arrangement were identified and tested to investigate their effect on shear capacity of Z-section steel purlin. Results indicated that the presence of web opening did not improve the engineering behaviour and performance of Z-section steel purlin in terms of shear behaviour. However, improvement in terms of volume reduction was observed. Each 0.1D (where D is the section height) enlargement of opening size caused an approximate 10% drop in shear buckling capacity (SBC) while volume reduction (VR) increased exponentially. Diamond shape performed up to 55% better in SBC compared to circular shape opening but circular shape opening performed up to 24% better in VR. Sections with smaller section height had higher SBC compared to sections with bigger section height. Nevertheless, sections with bigger section height had higher VR. No significant difference in terms of shear buckling capacity was observed when opening distance was varied. Opening position had no effect on SBC and VR. Opening arrangement had no significant effect on SBC and VR. An optimal section of Z100-19 with 0.3D to 0.5D diamond shaped opening and an opening distance of 100mm centre to centre depending on engineer’s specification is proposed.
