In this project, a RFID reader and an active tag are developed using nRF905 transceiver. The nRF905 transceiver is attached to ATmega8L microcontroller. AVR Studio 4, the environment for writing the assembly language, will be utilized. The assembly language is compiled through the assembler in AVR Studio 4 to generate a HEX file. The HEX file is then downloaded into the microcontroller ATmega8L through SPI interface using In-System Programming Tools AVRISP mkII. The performance of reader and tag such as current consumption and RFID read range are studied using nRF905 transceiver. The maximum read range of the RFID is 36 m, which use the maximum RF output power (10dBm) for the transmitter. To reduce the current consumption of the tag, the microcontroller is set into sleep mode for 32.768ms. The current consumption for the tag during sleep mode is 41.8mA. The transmitted data packet from the tag to reader is shown in HyperTerminal. Lastly, this project has proven that the RFID system has been successfully developed using the nRF905 transceiver.
