The effect of cavity number on vortex trapping for low aspect ratio wing _Chin Chee Leong_A2_2014_NI
______________________________________________________________________________________ Wing with cavity has proven to be advantageous in terms of aerodynamic characteristics such as lift and drag by Kasper (1974) in the past. However, there is very limited study that manipulates the cavity to trap vortex for low aspect ratio wing. Therefore, it is important to study the effect of cavity on the performance of low aspect ratio wing, particularly the number of cavity. In this final year project, wind tunnel test is carried out at low subsonic speed (Re<1×106) within angle of attack -14° to 24° for a designed and fabricated low aspect ratio (AR=2.8) wing model with cavity. The experimental results suggest that increasing the number of cavity contribute to the increment of stall angle at all Reynolds number; thus showing that flow separation is delayed. In addition, increment of the aerodynamics lift can be observed for Reynolds number of Re= 2×105 and Re= 3×105 at angle of attack higher than 15° towards stall angle. In terms of aerodynamic drag, increasing the number of cavity on the wing has proven to reduce the drag at Re= 3×105. Overall, the effect of number of cavity is more significant for drag compared to lift at higher Reynolds number.
