Occurrence of thm in chlorinated drinking water from groundwater sources in Kelantan

Occurrence of thm in chlorinated drinking water from groundwater sources in Kelantan / Che Nur Hidayati Mohd Husaini
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Water is an important constituent of human in daily life. The demand of clean drinking water increasing by year and the percentage of consumer that needs the drinking water supply also increasing. From previous research, DBPs are considered carcinogenic, which can cause cancer to human. World Health Organisation (WHO) gives attentions to the issues and they limit the DBPs production in the water supply system. This research has two main objective which were to monitor water quality of treatment plant that applying chlorine and preozonation + chlorination as disinfectant and to identify THM occurrences in disinfected drinking water applying different disinfection scheme. Natural organic matter (NOM) present in water when react with disinfectant to produce disinfection by products (DBPs) such as trihalomethanes (THMs). In this study, water sample were collected from two different water treatment plants which are located at Pintu Geng and Kg.Puteh, Kelantan. The sample were collected in order to investigate water quality parameter such as pH, temperature, total organic carbon (TOC), ammonia nitrogen, UV absorbance 254 nm and THMs concentration for both water treatment plant. The data were shown not detected for most sample of THMs formations. Beside, data showed no significant different on pH, temperature, total organic carbon (TOC), and UV absorbance 254nm for both treatment plants. All data should comply with Malaysian Drinking Water Quality Standard allowable limits for drinking water. This is because if the data are not followed the guideline it might be effect to human health.
