Evaluation of fructose as cross-linking agent for agarcollagen scaffold

Evaluation of fructose as cross-linking agent for agarcollagen scaffold / Hong Ming Ming
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ A preliminary study of agar/collagen scaffold cross-linked with fructose was carried out with purpose of enhancing its properties. Scanning electron microscopy, water uptake analysis, degradation analysis and DSC analysis were used to determine the properties of the scaffold. In the present work, the water uptake of scaffold decreased after being treated with fructose. This was accompanied with the decrease in scaffold thickness, suggesting crosslinking of scaffold. Percentage degradation of scaffold was low after treatment with fructose up to a certain point where treatment at 400 and 800 mM significantly increased the percentage degradation. From the structure of scaffold cross-linked with high fructose concentration, it seems the treatment with high fructose concentration leads to brittle scaffold. Similar trends in water uptake and percentage degradation was observed between fructose treated scaffold and scaffold treated with the conventional crosslinking agent, GA. This shows that fructose has the potential to be used as a non-toxic crosslinking agent for agar/collagen scaffold.
