Pembentukkan pencemaran selalu memberi maslah kepada negara-negara perindustian di dunia. Pencemaran selalu belaku disebabkan oleh aktiviti manusia seperti pembuangan sisa dari industri, aliran pulangan pertanian dan sisa larian di bandar. Walaubagaimanapun, untuk memahami pergerakan pencemaran ini amat susah untuk ditentukan dan dikenal pasti. Oleh itu, satu teknik untuk menggambarkan pergerakan pencemar di dalam media poros amat diperlukan. Kolum eksperimen adalah salah satu alat yang berguna untuk mempelajari pergerakan dan perubabahan pencemaran di dalam media poros. Teknik ini melibatkan pengunaaan sensor penggesan masa berkala yang boleh memberi bacaan kelembapan air dan nilai kokonduksian di dalam bentuk 1-dimensi (aliran ke bawah) kolum dengan keadaan media poros yang berbeza. Eksperimen ini akan dimulakan dengan mengenal pasti ciri-ciri pada media poros. Media poros yang akan digunakan ialah manik kaca dan natrium klorida akan bertindak sebagai bahan pencemar di dalam eksperimen ini. Selepas itu, terdapat tiga keadaan yang akan mempengaruhi pergerakan pencemar iaitu ketika manik kaca di dalam media poros yang berkeadaan kering, sebahagian tepu dan sepenuhnya tepu. Ketiga-tiga keaadaan ini akan dibandingkan melalui faktor konduktiviti, kandungan kelembapan, kepekatan bahan pencemar, ketinggian dan tempoh masa pergerakkan pencemar dari ketinggian atas ke ketinggian bawah di dalam kolum. Faktor seperti ruang liang di antara manik kaca, kesan kapilari dan jumlah berat menik kaca di dalam ketiga-tiga keadaan menjadi faktor yang mempengaruhi pergerakan pencemar di dalam media poros. Akhir sekali, hubungan di antara faktor-faktor pengaruh dan juga parameter output telah diplot ke dalam graf dan perbandingan telah dilakukan untuk mendapatkan keadaan yang terbaik untuk pergerakan bahan pencemar. Pemahaman yang jelas terhadap pergerakan bahan pencemar membolehkan jurutera memilih keadaan tanah yang sesuai dan sistem air bawah tanah yang lebih baik supaya kerosakan dapat dikurangkan dan dielakkan. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Contamination forms a problem in all of industrialized countries in the world. Contamination has been impacted by human activities such as industrial discharges, agricultural return flows and urban runoff. Unfortunately, movement of the contamination is not easy to define and identified. Therefore, a technique for visualizing contaminant transport in the porous medium is needed. Column experiment is a very useful apparatus that can be used to study the movement and migration of contaminant through porous media. The technique which included the use of Time Domain Reflectrometry (TDR) sensor to determine the moisture content and conductivity value using 1-dimensional (downward flow) arcylic column in different condition. Firstly, behaviour of the porous media which is glass beads will be determined. For this column experiment, sodium chloride will be used as the source of the contaminant. Then, there are three influenced which included dry, partially saturated and saturated conditions of the porous media will be considered for the comparison of their conductivity, moisture content, concentration of the polluted water, elevation and time elapsed of the sodium chloride movement from top elevation to the bottom elevation of acrylic column. Lastly, the relationship and behaviour between the influenced conditions and also output parameters were plotted into graphs and comparison was done in order to get the best condition for the contaminant transport through porous media. Pore space between the glass beads, capillary effect and total volume of the glass beads are the factors that influence the movement of the contaminant in 1-dimensional column experiment. The understanding of the movement contaminant transport enables engineers to produce a better soil and groundwater condition so that the damage can be minimized and prevented.
