Evaluation of misting system for palm oil mill effluent odour control

Evaluation of misting system for palm oil mill effluent odour control / Muhammad Nabil Md Rahimi
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Waste generation from palm oil mill contributes in various environmental pollutions and one of the most serious problems is odour pollution produced by palm oil mill effluent (POME). This undesirable odour will not only affect the air quality concern but also the surrounding residential and institutional areas. The application of misting system had been used in this project to eliminate the malodour produced by POME since misting system is widely used over the world in dealing with odour problems. Misting system was installed in lab-scale with nozzles that sprayed the ultrafine particles of chemicals along the boundary lines of area source where the POME sample was placed to suppress the odour. In this study, biochemical named BioClean™ was used as the chemical. The parameters that were varied throughout this project were the number of nozzles, the spraying frequency and the flowrate of the sprayed biochemical. Three types of odour assessment which were portable personal olfactometer (SM 100) measurement, hedonic tone and odour quality classification were conducted to determine the effectiveness of the biochemical in different conditions of misting system to eliminate the POME malodour. Ammonia test and sulfide test were also done on POME sample to identify the effects of the misting system application to the sample. Based on the results, the most effective and cost saving condition for the setup of misting system in removing the odour produced by POME was the usage of 16 nozzles with the three-time spray frequency and 45 liter/minute of flowrate. In sum, the application of misting system spraying the biochemical can indeed manage the serious malodour problem of POME.
