Fixed-bed adsorption of carbon dioxide on NaOHactivated alumina beads

Fixed-bed adsorption of carbon dioxide on NaOHactivated alumina beads / Nurul Darsani Amat Darbis
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Activated alumina has been synthesized using sodium hydroxide and it is has been used for the fixed-bed adsorption of carbon dioxide from the gas stream (15% CO2 and balance with N2). The synthesized activated alumina have been studied at different conditions such as percentage of the sodium hydroxide (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50%), calcination temperature (200, 300, 400 and 500 °C) and calcination time (2, 3 and 4 h). 30% sodium hydroxide/activated alumina calcined at 500 °C for 4 h achieved the highest adsorption (51.92 mg CO2/g adsorbent). The surface properties, surface morphology and crystalline structure of the activated alumina have been characterized by using BET, SEM, FTIR and XRD, respectively. The fixed-bed adsorption of CO2 was studied under different conditions of adsorption temperature (35, 45 and 55 °C ±1), total feed flow rate (90, 120 and 150 mL/min), percentage of carbon dioxide in the feed (12, 15 and 18%), weight of activated alumina (2, 4 and 6 g) and particle size activated alumina (1-2 and 3-4 mm). Subsequently, the breakthrough curves where established for different adsorption conditions. The adsorption results revealed that 15% concentration of CO2 in the feed, 90 mL/min total feed flow rate, 4 g of adsorbent in the column and 1-2 mm adsorbent particle gave the longest breakthrough time (220 s) and 35 °C adsorption temperature was more favorable for the system.
