Waveguide and microstrip coupling through slot_Muhammad Ridhwaan Abdul Gafoor_E3_2013_NI
___________________________________________________________________________________ There are several methods of transition from a Microstrip Line (MSL) to Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) that has been proposed before. Some of the better known methods are coupling through slot, coupling by probe feeding and taper coupling. The purpose of this project is to research in detail, one of the method mentioned above that is the Slot Coupling. The slot acts as a window for the coupling to take place between the MSL and SIW. From previous research of SIW, the diameter of the vias and the pitch, that is the distance between the vias, will affect the return loss and insertion loss. This project will discuss how the different position of slot and different sizes of the slot will affect the coupling of the signal from MSL to SIW. The slot pattern was kept the same for entire experiment as the rectangular shape and the stub length were also kept constant. The characteristic of the slot coupling from MSL to SIW was studied in terms of the design of the layout followed by simulation and analysis and finally the design was fabricated for characterization. At the design and simulation stage, research was conducted to understand how the positions of the slot and the different sizes of the slot affected the coupling. Two important S parameters that defined the frequency response of a two port network, that is the S11 and S21, were used to understand the coupling behaviour. Once the best position and size of the slot was identified the design was fabricated for actual measurement where it was compared to the simulated results. The discrepancies between the simulated results against the measured results were also explained. Finally steps on how the design could be improved for future projects were proposed.
