Upgrading waste motor oil using ultrasonic treatment

Upgrading waste motor oil using ultrasonic treatment / Mohd.Khairi Uje
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Motor oil is used as lubricant for internal combustion engines. This is useful as it will help to decrease heat caused by friction and reducing wear. However, it needs to be replaced at certain time. The waste motor oil becomes the major concern when disposing. To minimize impact to environment, one of useful method for the waste motor oil is by upgrading it. In this research, ultrasonic treatment is used for the upgrading of the waste motor oil. The parameter studied are the effect of the residence time (sonication time), amplitude of ultrasonic and presence of catalyst during sonolysis of the WMO. The liquid product was analyzed for its boiling range and viscosity. In order to have a better understanding of the system, sonolysis model compound dodecane has also been carried out. Generally, the increase of residence time and ultrasonic amplitude, the conversion and light liquid fraction in waste motor oil increased. From result analysis, the best operating condition within the study range was using 50% ultrasound amplitude for 90 minutes. Further, catalytic sonication was also found to increase the conversion about double compared to the non-catalytic system.
