Infrared data transfer is becoming increasingly more important. Television remote control control use infrared light, but so do PC mice, keyboards, printers and other peripherals. Infrared light is also used in fibre-optic cables. This is because the infrared devices offer lower production costs, wide operating range and good communication security. In a sense, the PC infrared receiver presented in this project was a practical application that represents a continuation of the series of articles on PC interface and Visual Basic. This project was divided into two sections. One was design of electronics circuit and another one was software writing in Visual Basic 6. Design of printed circuit board (PCB) is made so that all components can be arranged in sequence. Receiving infrared signal from the remote control was the most critical part in this project because the received infrared signal need to be identify before we can proceed to the next section . Visual Basic 6 was used to decode the received infrared signal and perform some particular PC’s functions such as remote power point presentation and window media player. Serial port DB-9 (COM1) was used as the interface between computer and the hardware of this project. Serial RS-232 interface was used because the voltage supply can get directly from the serial port and no external power supply was needed. By end of the project, total six brands of remote controls were able to use to remote the PC such as Philips, Sony, JVC, LG, Sharp and Pioneer.
