Essential to the smart grid definitions is the integration of enabling information and communication technologies (ICT) and other advanced technologies with the large-scale power networks to enable electric energy generation, transmission, distribution, and usage to be more efficient, effective, economical, and environmentally sustainable [1] Smart grids are a combination of complex physical network systems and cyber systems that face many technological challenges. The reliability of data communications system, specifically wireless communication is crucial to ensure continuous, efficient, and secure operation of the next generation smart power grid. Generally, the reliability studies can be performed from three levels, in which each will add into the complexity of the previous one [2]. From the result obtained, line rating increase of 50% provides better expected energy not supply (EENS) compared to 30% increase in line rating. Moreover, the performance evaluation result has revealed that the failure of wireless devices in smart grid network can incur significant cost to the public utility. So, the key to optimizing transmission line and minimizing the cost of power supply is to make sure that the wireless network system of the smart grid network must be able to operate under the failure of some of its component. This is to make sure that the Dynamic Thermal Rating (DTR) can be implemented successfully.
