Tsunami and earthquake are two natural disasters occurring all over the world and the impacts brought by them are huge and causes enormous loss in economic and human lives. Shear wall which has high strength and rigidity thus become a suitable structural systems to resist the lateral forces. There is a lot of tsunami or earthquake-resistant buildings have been designed for evacuation or shelter purpose to save the life. However, there is no or small number of building designed to resist both types of loadings. Hence, this study focused on the investigation of the structural behaviour of shear wall building subjected to both types of loadings. The breakaway wall concept was introduced in this study to minimise the effect of the tsunami forces. Two combinations of tsunami forces were considered namely, hydrodynamic drag with surge force and hydrodynamic drag with debris damming force. The analysis involved three different height of shear wall building namely low (two-storey), medium (eight- storey) and high (eighteen-storey) rise building and different structural responses were obtained. For low rise building, the computed tsunami load was small and hence resulted in small impact on the building. For medium and high rise shear wall building, the earthquake load is dominance and prudent care need to be taken into consideration. Overall, the designer should consider the earthquake load rather than tsunami load in design especially the high rise shear wall building. For low rise building, designer can consider the control case with sufficient load factor to overcome any uncertain circumstances such as underestimation of tsunami forces.
