Study of removal heavy metal in effluent by using thin coated adsorbent layer

Study of removal heavy metal in effluent by using thin coated adsorbent layer / Che Shaharudin Che Leh @ Salleh
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Low adsorption capacity of natural clay minerals is a technical and economic issue which limits their industrial application as low cost absorbents for removal of heavy metals from wastewater. In this study, has been focused on adsorption process through coating method which is thin coated adsorbent layer. This research has contributed to the production of adsorbent coating using ‘Paintosorp’. Paintosorp as an environmental friendly paint was made up from adsorbent which is bentonite, waterbased binder and distilled water as a solution for heavy metal removal techniques. The adsorption behaviour of Paintosorp with respect to Cu2+ and Zn2+ has been studied in order to consider its application to the purification of wastewater. The batch method has been employed, using metal concentrations in solution ranging from 10 mg/L to 50 mg/L. The percentage removal and uptake level of metal ions were determined for the adsorption. Experiments were carried out as a function of concentration of metals, solution pH, mixing speed and temperature. The percentage removal of metal ions increases with a decrease in the initial metal ion concentration. The influence of the pH of the metal ion solutions on the uptake levels of the metal ions were carried out between pH 3 and pH 11. The optimum pH for copper and zinc removal was pH 5. The Paintosorp is characterized using SEM techniques. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms.
