Robot pengikut merupakan sebuah robot yang mempunyai kemampuan untuk mengikut objek pemimpin dalam satu jarak yang tertentu. Pengesan jarak digunakan untuk pengukuran jarak di antara robot pengikut and objek pemimpin. Robot pengikut bertujuan membantu orang kurang upaya sebagai aplikasi pembawa automatik. Kajian dilakukan pada dua jenis pengesan jarak iaitu pengesan ultrasonik dan pengesan infra-merah (IR) untuk menentukan jenis pengesan jarak yang mempunyai prestasi yang lebih baik untuk robot pengikut. Ujian juga dilakukan pada kombinasi kedua-dua jenis pengesan jarak. Data daripada pengesan jarak diproses di Intel Desktop Board D510MO dan isyarat kawalan dihantar ke litar kawalan motor untuk mengawal pergerakan robot pengikut. Gerakan robot pengikut adalah berdasarkan jarak yang dikesan oleh kedua-dua pengesan. Keputusan kajian menunjukkan bahawa pengesan ultrasonik mempunyai prestasi yang lebih baik daripada pengesan infra-merah (IR) dalam aspek liputan pengesanan, ketepatan pengukuran dan kadar reaksi pengukuran. Kombinasi kedua-dua pengesan menghadapi masalah dalam ketepatan pengukuran dan kadar reaksi pengukuran. Pengesan ultrasonik adalah pilihan yang sesuai untuk pengukuran jarak di robot pengikut. _________________________________________________________________________________________ Robot follower is a robot with ability to perform "following" task in a specific distance from leader object. Distance sensors are used for distance measurement between robot follower and leader object Robot follower aims to assist handicapped persons in carrying task. Robot follower is applied as an automatic carrier by following the target. Testing and measurement are carried out on two types of distance sensors which are ultrasonic distance sensor and infrared (IR) distance sensor to determine the type of distance sensor that have better performance for robot follower. Combinational of both sensors is also tested. Input data from sensors is processed in Intel Desktop Board D510MO and control signal is sent to motor driver to drive the robot follower. Movement of robot follower is based on the distances measured from two sensors. Experimental results show that ultrasonic distance sensor has more advantages than infrared (IR) distance sensor in term of valid range of detection, accuracy of measurement and response time of measurement. Combinational of both sensors has losses in accuracy of measurement and response time of measurement. Thus, ultrasonic distance sensor is the choice for distance measurement in robot follower.
