Power that are absorbed by photovoltaic (PV) panel is affected by sunlight
intensity, irradiance and temperature. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) is an
algorithm in controller system that are enable the maximum power to be extracted
from the PV panel. The PV system with MPPT is introduced to track maximum
power available at that particular time. This project consists of two part where the
first part is a dc-dc converter part and the second part is the microcontroller which all
the sensor attached to it. The dc-dc boost converter is built where the PWM is
regulated according to the duty cycle that are managed by microcontroller to keep
track the maximum power point. The second part is the microcontroller part where
all the sensors are attached in the system. The sensors that are used in this project are
voltage sensor and current sensor to tracking the input power of dc-dc boost
converter. The algorithm that are installed inside the microcontroller is using Perturb
and Observer (P&O) method where this method compare the highest power that can
be made by PV panel at that particular time. This microcontroller acts as the „brain”
in the system to determine the suitable duty cycle percentage that need to be fed by
the MOSFET in the dc-dc boost converter. This experiment compares the efficiency
of PV system that with MPPT and without MPPT. The power output from system
with MPPT and without MPPT are logged by using Fluke43B. As a result, the data
logged for 3 days show that the power of PV system with MPPT have higher power
output which average power are improve 14.53W, 11.67W and 9.58W compared to
the PV system without MPPT. This show that the system with MPPT have higher
efficiency compared to the system without MPPT.
