BS EN 45503:1996 is a European Standard for "Medical electrical equipment - Particular requirements for safety - Specification for safety requirements for electrical equipment and systems for operation in special electromagnetic environments".
This standard provides safety requirements for medical electrical equipment and systems that are intended to operate in special electromagnetic environments, such as those found in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment, diathermy equipment, and other medical devices that use electromagnetic fields.
The standard specifies safety requirements for the design, construction, and testing of medical electrical equipment and systems, as well as for their installation, operation, and maintenance. It covers a range of topics related to safety, including electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), and protection against electrical and non-electrical hazards.
BS EN 45503:1996 is part of a series of standards developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to provide safety requirements for medical electrical equipment. This standard was adopted by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) as a European Standard and has been widely adopted by manufacturers and regulatory bodies in Europe and other parts of the world.
