1.1 This Code of Practice contains the general requirements for total flooding gaseous fire fighting systems. It does not cover fire fighting systems that use carbon dioxide, Halon 1301, Halon 1211, Halon 2402, or water, some of which are addressed by other documents listed in Appendix B. 1.2 This Code of Practice is prepared for the use and guidance of those charged with specifying, designing, installing, testing, approving, inspecting, operating and maintaining engineered or pre-engineered fire fighting systems, so that such equipment will function as intended throughout its life. Nothing in this Code of Practice is intended to restrict new technologies or alternate arrangements provided that the level of safety prescribed by this Code of Practice is not lowered. 1.3 This Code of Practice specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, installation, testing, maintenance and safety of gaseous fire fighting systems in building or other construction works, and the characteristics of the various extinguishants and types of fire for which they are a suitable extinguishing medium. 1.4 This Code of Practice does not cover explosion suppression systems, systems in which gaseous extinguishant is discharged to pre-inert a flammable or explosive gas mixture, or small fixed fire extinguishers which are covered by other standards. 1.5 Total flood systems are also widely used on ships and in aircraft, and while the requirements of this Code of Practice may apply in general for such applications, additional requirements may be necessary, and reference made to the appropriate standards.
