Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) has become a practical alternative construction material for replacing steel bars as reinforcement in concrete structures due to its high strength-to-weight ratio of FRP. This study deals with an experimental work to investigate the difference in loading carrying capacity, crack width, crack pattern and crack location between precast concrete pipes (900mm and 1200mm) reinforced with steel and GFRP composites. The effect of the width, thickness and the spacing of the GFRP composites on the structural behavior is studied. Orthogonal layout of GFRP reinforcement with two configurations of spacing, width and thickness of GFRP has been studied. Comparison between structural behaviour of concrete pipes reinforced with steel and GFRP cage has been carried out through crushing test. 900 mm diameter GFRP reinforced concrete pipe was found unable to be fabricated using
spinning process due to low rigidity of the cage. From the crushing test result, the crushing strength of control specimens reinforced with steel cage is found to be higher when compared with orthogonal type GFRP cages. Orthogonal type GFRP reinforced specimen is found to be able to meet the requirement of the crushing load for DN 1200 Class S concrete pipe. In term of cracking behaviour, the cracking of steel reinforced specimen increases gradually with increment of crushing load. Conversely, for the orthogonal type GFRP reinforced specimen, the cracking rate increases rapidly when increasing the crushing load after the initiation of first crack. The result of the test indicated that the orthogonal type GFRP reinforced specimen is able to meet the requirement of the crushing load for DN 1200 Class S concrete pipe.
