Preparation, characterization and performance of ordered mesoporous sno2 for detection of ethanol vapour

Preparation, characterization and performance of ordered mesoporous sno2 for detection of ethanol vapour / Mohamad Taufiq Jaafar
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Ordered mesoporous SnO2 was synthesized by nanocasting method using mesoporous KIT-6 silica as a template. In the present study, mesoporous KIT-6 silica which used as the template was synthesized to study the effect of different hydrothermal treatments (60°C, 80°C and 100°C) of silica template on the formation of mesoporous SnO2. Tin chloride dehydrate (SnCl2.2H2O) was used as tin precursor and impregnated into the pores of mesoporous KIT-6 silica template and then the composite was heated at a certain temperature to convert the tin precursor to tin oxide. The mesoporous KIT-6 silica template was finally removed by leaching process, yielding the mesoporous SnO2 as its negative replica. SEM analysis, EDX analysis and BET analysis were used to determine the structural, element present, and the BET surface area of the mesoporous SnO2. The result of structural analysis, indicate that the highest BET surface area was obtained from mesoporous SnO2(K6-80) which gives 93.694 m2/g. The gas sensing performance of the K6-80 mesoporous SnO2 gives the highest sensitivity of 11.667 with the response and recovery time of 167s and 190s respectively. Mesoporous SnO2(K6-80) were then dopped with tungsten with loadings of 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 weight % in order to further study about the effect of tungsten to mesoporous SnO2. It was found that mesoporous SnO2 doped with 7.5% weight of tungsten gives the highest sensitivity towards 1000ppm ethanol vapour.
