Photocatalytic membranes have shown great potential for use in energy-efficient water purification and wastewater treatment since they combine the physical separation of membrane filtration and the organic degradation. Compared to conventional separation membranes, photocatalytic membranes possess a number of unique properties, such as anti-fouling, anti-microbial, superhydrophilicity, concurrent photocatalytic oxidation and separation, all of which make them an attractive technology in water treatment. This paper reports on the preparation and characterisation of polysulfone mixed-matrix membranes where different photocatalyst nanoparticles have been incorporated into polysulfone materials with polyvinylpyrollidone (PVP) as the pore forming agent. Phase inversion method was used to prepare the membranes. The PSf-MMMs were then characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle techniques before photocatalytic and physical separation performance are studied. Based on the study, it was found that Mn-doped TiO2 membrane has the best performance among the membrane fabricated due to its high performances in term of physical separation performance and photocatalytic activity. The hydrophilicity of membranes with photocatalysts was enhanced by adding the photocatalyst but the structure changes are insignificant due to agglomeration of photocatalyst nanoparticles on membrane surfaces. In term of photocatalytic activity, the degradation of Humic Acid by using photocatalytic membranes is a bit lower than that free particles loading mainly due to the non-homogenous dispersion of nanoparticles in membrane matrix.
