Potential use of titanium tetrachloride as coagulant to treat textile wastewater

Potential use of titanium tetrachloride as coagulant to treat textile wastewater / Muhammad Zamir Abd Rahim
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Textile industry is one of the major industries in the world and consumes a lot of water and produce large amount of wastewater. The treatment is important before this wastewater is release to environment in order to protect it. Coagulation and flocculation is relatively simple physical chemical technique that commonly been used to treat textile wastewater. Coagulation acts as neutralizing agents for electrical charges of particle in textile wastewater. A variety of conventional coagulants such as aluminium sulphate, ferric sulphate and ferric chloride has been widely used. Titanium (IV) Chloride (TiCl4) was tested in this research and it has never been applied for textile wastewater treatment before. In this research, the capability of Titanium (IV) Chloride (TiCl4) has been studied to treat textile wastewater from textile factory, that is located at Perai Industrial Estate, Penang. The textile wastewater was first characterized. The textile wastewater has high value of colour, suspended solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Ammonia and Turbidity. Standard jar test was conducted to determine the optimum pH and dosage in removing colour, suspended solids, ammonia, Chemical Oxygen Demand, and Turbidity. Standard jar test was conducted to determine the optimum pH and coagulant dosage. At optimum dosage 300mg/L and pH 6, the percentage of removal are 98.8%, 22.14%, 99.64%, 82.04% and 56.16% for turbidity, colour, suspended solid, ammonia and COD respectively. Titanium tetrachloride is good coagulant in removing Turbidity, suspended solid and ammonia but not efficient in removing colour and COD.
