Olahan air sisa tekstil merupakan salah satu masalah terbesar yang dihadapi oleh industri tekstil. Penggunaan teknologi pewarna yang kompleks dalam industri tekstil membuatkan olahan semasa tidak berkesan. Salah satu industri tekstil di Prai, Pulau Pinang telah mengeluarkan air sisa dengan kekeruhan, pepejal terampai dan warna yang tinggi. Kajian ini telah dijalankan untuk menyiasat kecekapan Zirconium (IV) Tetraklorida (ZrCl4) sebagai bahan pengumpal untuk mengolah air sisa tekstil secara proses pengumpalan/pengelompokan. Penilaian adalah berdasarkan kepada penyingkiran kekeruhan, pepejal terampai, warna, ammonia dan keperluan oksigen kimia (COD) dengan menggunakan ujian balang. Satu eksperimen ujian balang telah dilakukan di pelbagai dos pengumpal dan pH untuk menentukan keadaan yang optimum. Prosedur yang dilakukan termasuk 1 minit pengacauan cepat (250 rpm), 20 minit pengacauan perlahan (30 rpm) dan 30 minit untuk pemendapan. Selain itu, analisis enapcemar juga diambil kira pada dos dan pH yang optimum. Dos optimum ZrCl4 yang telah digunakan adalah 500 mg/L pada pH 6. Pada keadaan ini, penyingkiran pepejal terampai, kekeruhan dan warna adalah masing-masing 98.13%, 96.91%, 76.76%. Analisis terhadap enapcemar pada keadaan optimum memberikan nilai Indeks Isipadu Enap Cemar (SVI) 159.32 mL/g dengan halaju pemendapan 1.59 cm/min. Saiz endapan zarah median adalah 72.449 μm. Walau bagaimanapun, peratusan penyingkiran ammonia dan COD adalah masing-masing 16.36% dan 37.92%. Kesimpulannya, ZrCl4 adalah bahan pengumpal yang berkesan yang sangat boleh mengurangkan tahap kekeruhan dan pepejal terampai dalam air sisa tekstil. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Treatment of textile wastewater is one of the largest problems faced by the textile industry. New development of complex dyes used in textile industry makes the current treatment is not effective. One of the textile industries in Prai, Pulau Pinang has been discharging wastewater with high turbidity, suspended solid and colour. This study was conducted to investigate the efficiency of Zirconium (IV) Tetrachloride (ZrCl4) as a coagulant to treat textile wastewater with the coagulation/flocculation process. Evaluation was based on the removal of turbidity, suspended solid, colour, ammonia and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) by using jar test. The procedures included 1 minutes of rapid mixing (250 rpm), 20 minutes of slow mixing (30 rpm) and 30 minutes of settling. Apart from that, the sludge analysis was also taken into consideration at optimum dosage and pH. For determining the efficiency of ZrCl4 as coagulant, the jar test was run at the optimum condition. Optimum dosage of ZrCl4 that has been used is 500 mg/L while the pH is 6. The removal of suspended solid, turbidity and colour are 98.13%, 96.91%, 76.76% respectively. However, the percentage removal of ammonia and COD are 16.36% and 37.92% respectively. In addition to sludge analysis at the optimum condition, the value of sludge volume index (SVI) and the settling velocity is 159.32 mL/g 1.59 cm/min respectively. The median flocs size is 72.449 μm. In conclusion, ZrCl4 is an effective coagulant which can highly reduce the level of turbidity and suspended solid in textile wastewater.
