______________________________________________________________________________________ In this 21st century, the quality of electric power distributed to us has become a concern and attention. There are few international standards of harmonic emission made for the AC-DC switched mode power supply. To fulfill these standards, power factor correction is very needed. In tradition, analog controller is used for implementation in power factor correction in switched mode power supply. But, the progress in the manufacturing technologies of digital devices has changed the situation, where the low cost yet powerful digital controllers can be challenging the analog controllers in improving power factor. Digital control technique for power factor correction using pre-calculated algorithm with low cost 8-bit microcontroller is presented in this paper. Based on this, duty cycles for half line period are computed offline and then stored into device’s memory. Nearly unity power factor can be achieved based on synchronization of AC voltage line with look up table in the memory. The benefit of using this technique is that it doesn’t require us to measure the current and also doesn’t need to use powerful and expensive digital device. A prototype of boost power factor converter circuit which is controlled by the 8-bit microcontroller, is set up to implement the technique proposed. Both simulation and experimental results show positive trend, indicating that the technique proposed can achieve unity power factor.
